Police motorcycle operation is vastly different from civilian motorcycle operation. Police motor patrol is inherently more dangerous than patrol in a cruiser.
The motor officer is not afforded the degree of protection, which is
sometimes taken for granted in a cruiser. In the Basic Police Motorcycle
Operators Course the student will be given guidelines and shown techniques, which will
enhance his ability to properly operate a police motor. Proper training and
practice along with motor maintenance can be very effective in reducing motor
related accidents and injuries.
Safety is paramount during this course of instruction. Students
are expected to remain within their capabilities and the guidelines of the
course and will follow the direction of the instructors. No 'hot dogging" or
unsafe riding will be tolerated. Unsafe riders will be removed from training for
their own safety and the safety of the other students.
Any injury or accident
must be immediately reported to an instructor.
All students must possess a motorcycle
endorsement on drivers license
RIGL 31-10.1-1 and have the following equipment upon arrival:
|
-Police Department Motorcycle
(Pre-Inspected)
-DOT/SNELL certified helmet (3/4
shell recommended)
-Eyewear (Wrap-Around Lenses
Recommended)
-Ankle-High Boots
-Riding Gloves
-Leather/Kevlar Jacket (Optional/Recommended)

Dress code: Students are expected to maintain a professional
posture at training. Clothing which has derogatory or offensive words or
graphics will not be allowed.
It will be the responsibility of
the student to ensure that his motor is in proper running condition prior to
arriving at this course of instruction. Police motor should be professionally
inspected prior to attendance with specific attention given to tires, brakes and
clutch. This course will be run regardless of weather, with the exception of severe conditions. Students should be prepared to ride,
wind, rain or shine and have gear to protect from all elements. Rain Gear, Sun
Screen etc.
Every precaution is taken to
prevent damage to equipment or injury to personnel. Students must have all
safety equipment in place prior to riding the motorcycle. Motorcycle engine guards and saddle bag guards are
the primary points to impact the pavement when
a motorcycle goes down and are therefore wrapped in fire hose. (Students are
asked to bring duct tape and fire hose with them) It is the responsibility of
the student to ensure the bike remains properly wrapped during training. Some departments have invested in
replacement engine guards which they use during training.
Students should be physically fit, able to endure a rigorous course of
instruction. This course will include righting a fallen motorcycle as well as
physically demanding exercises. Students with recent injuries or recurring physical problems are not ideal candidates.
Training Officers Should Consider An Officer Carefully.
The Basic Police Motorcycle Operators Course is an 80 hour course of instruction which is designed to help the motor officer to better understand the capabilities and limitations of his motor, as well as his own
capabilities and limitations.
It is imperative that students be present and on
time for all training!
(0800 hrs. to 1600 hrs.
Monday through Friday)
Students who have
prior obligations, which will conflict
with training should not attend.
